With the five-day Thanksgiving holiday on the horizon in the U.S., “Mockingjay 2” grossed $11.3 million on Tuesday at 4,175 locations, up an impressive 33% from Monday. It debuted to $102.7 million last weekend, scoring the fifth best opening of 2015 — and the lowest of the franchise.
“Mockingjay — Part 2” and Disney’s “The Good Dinosaur” are expected to battle for first place over the long weekend. The first “Mockingjay” opened to $121.9 million last year on the weekend before Thanksgiving and declined 32% to $82.7 million over the five days, so if “Part 2” performs similarly, it should have a five-day weekend at about $68 million.
“Mockingjay – Part 2” bowed in 87 international markets and 32,500 screens, making it the widest day-and-date release of the year, and Lionsgate’s most ambitious rollout to date. The picture opened in first place in 81 of the markets where it played, scoring $17.1 million from in the U.K., $16.4 million in China, $14.4 million in Germany and $8.7 million in Mexico.
