<b>A wise man once said that the secret to attraction is locked up in our unique imperfections, flaws and frailties. Art is almost never perfect. Yet, it’s always beautiful and enchanting. Sanjay Leela Bhansali is an artist and Bajirao Mastani is his labour of love. It’s replete with flaws, it depicts its own version of history but it does so with masterful finesse. You will rarely see a more stunning compilation of visuals in a film. The poetic images in Bajirao Mastani can leave you spellbound. The narrative though is a mixed bag. It’s selling the same-old love triangle formula, but it has some fascinating progressive themes ticking under the hood.</b></div>

<b>This is the story of Peshwa Bajirao. He’s an important historical figure in India, so much so that his tales are a part of school curriculum. But this film is not just about a man and his political conquests. Rather it’s about that man and his longing for love. On one of his famous battle missions Bajirao encounters the beautiful Mastani. She’s the daughter of a Rajput King, but her mother is Persian. They instantly fall in love. The problem is Bajirao is a married man, not to mention he’s the political leader of a Hindu sect. So when Mastani declares her love to the Peshwa’s family and kingdom it’s opposed vehemently. It strains political as well as personal relations in the war hero’s life. The focus here though is firm on the three central characters – Bajirao, Mastani and Bajirao’s wife Kashibai.</b></div>

<b>Historical inaccuracies are the main bone of contention in Bajirao Mastani. There is also song and dance regime which doesn’t lend itself to a Maratha warrior. The song Malhari in particular sticks out like a nail waiting to be hammered. But these are cinematic liberties, ones that add to the commercial allure of a film. They are jarring but they’re also seamlessly incorporated into the narrative. One of the biggest strengths Bajirao Mastani though is its dialogue. Some of the lines, especially those given to Deepika Padukone’s Mastani and Priyanka Chopra’s Kashibai are spellbinding.</b></div>

<b>In essence, the women in Bajirao Mastani are its pillars. Their characters are set in a feudal age in the 18th century when blind religious practices were rampant, yet the women display progressive thoughts and feelings. Even the main protagonist, Bajirao has been depicted as a pragmatic man. He’s shown willing to tweak societal rituals so as to honour the higher cause of compassion and love. He instructs Hindu religious leaders to accept and honour his half Muslim son. Upon their opposition, he even offers a logical hack to the system. Nonetheless, the stand out scene in the movie happens between Kashibai and Mastani. Their ice-breaking moment kicks off with unpleasant words and graceless digs. But it soon settles into an accord of respect and adulation. Two women are unhappy at the idea of sharing the same man, but they somehow reach an unspoken treaty where they accept the situation. It’s a fabulous piece of writing. One that really adds a spark to Bajirao Mastani.</b></div>

<b>Out of all antagonist characters in the film, the one that stands out is Bajirao’s mother Radhabai played by Tanvi Azmi. She’s the voice of the orthodox and the establishment. She refuses to accept Bajirao’s and Mastani’s relationship even when it’s become inevitable. She’s the chief troublemaker, but even her grey shades have a rooted meaning. There’s no black and white here. And that is the beauty of the characters designed by SLB.</b></div>

<b>Living up to every character are the actors. Ranveer Singh is the larger-than-life moustache twirling Maratha warrior. And he looks his part. On occasions he does take the chest thrusting, arm flailing and butt flexing swagger a bit too far, but the spot on Marathi accentuation and the energy he infuses into Bajirao are stellar. His stand-out scenes are in the court of Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj (played by Mahesh Manjrekar) and his confrontations with younger brother Chimaji (Vaibhav Tatwawdi). Deepika Padukone as the tormented lover looking for solace is on Madhubala in Mughl-E-Azam levels of tragedy. Her portrayal of Mastani is the perfect balance of allure and misfortune. And a slew of superlatives will not be enough for Priyanka Chopra in the role of Kashibai. She’s the one with a broken heart and stoic demeanor. She’s phenomenal to say the least. Together, the trio fills the Bajirao Mastani screen with verve and subtlety. Their performances are top notch.</b></div>

<b>Bajirao Mastani will also be remembered for its production design and costumes. The level of detailing in the film’s visuals is awe-inspiring. The camerawork and SLB’s vision for grandeur create a mirage of excellence on screen. SLB’s music is not only influential it’s emotional and touching. Rarely do Hindi movies look like they belong on a world stage. Bajirao Mastani is definitely a strong contender for that spot. It’s definitely one of the year’s best.</b></div>

<b>Movies about sports or sportspersons have always carried some attraction in Kollywood. The latest addition to the list is 'Eetti' which is about a sportsperson being dragged into a crime network. The film has come at the time when a commercial hit is crucial for the talented young actor Atharvaa who has played the lead role in the film. Let's see whether this film written and directed by debutante Ravi Arasu will achieve that.</b></div>

<b>Pugalendhi aka Pugal (Atharvaa) is a Tanjore based athlete who has broken the National record in a hurdling race at College level.  When he visits Chennai for the National level hurdling tournament along with his college mates, he accidentally saves the life of the whistleblower who is also his lover Gayathri's (Sridiviya) brother, from a fake currency mafia run by Shankar (RNR Manohar) and attacks a key member of the gang in the ensuing fight. This turns the mafia against him and they start seeking his blood in revenge. The rest is how Pugal wins over the mafia and emerges as the champion in the National level tournament.</b></div>

<b>Debutante writer director Ravi Arasu has presented action oriented film with good share of romance, family sentiment and comedy. With all these ingredients making the right impact and with Atharvaa giving his best for the role by sporting six packs. The film emerges as a predominantly entertaining and engaging commercial action flick that does not lag anywhere except a few songs that come as speed breakers. We know what is going to happen at the end and the basic story is not out of the box. But still Ravi Arasu has managed to hold up the interest and has employed novel ideas in. In other words the scenes and ideas we are used to and the turns which are predictable have been narrated in a different manner and that makes Ravi Arasu stand out as a commercial filmmaker.</b></div>

<b>Every character in the film has been well etched out and purposeful. This makes the film more relatable and we root for every positive character that comes across in the film and baddies are menacing.</b></div>

<b>The way the love develops between the lead pair is refreshing and relatable. The father-son relationship and the coach-student relationship have been dealt with in depth and the sentiment angle in these parts do not go overboard at any instance. The fight scenes are of course larger than life but the situations that lead to them have been portrayed realistically. There is no separate comedy track and the comedy comes in the form of teashop chat between college students and these scenes do serve the intended purpose. .</b></div>

<b>The film delves deep into the unexplored fake currency mafia and the writer-director's phenomenal homework for this is evident in the way it has been portrayed.</b></div>

<b>The film starts with the detailed explanation of the rare disease suffered by the lead character. The disease will make him fall unconscious and die if he suffers even a minor injury that causes bleeding. The introduction of the character with this disease is a brilliant idea as it keeps our hearts thumping in fight scenes involving the hero. But it would have made a greater impact if the disease has some bigger connection with the storyline. Even this disease part is removed the basic plot would have been no different.</b></div>

<b>The songs dampen the speed and especially the first half could have been a bit racier. The role played by the police department in bringing down the mafia could have been portrayed better.</b></div>

<b>This is going to be the cakewalk for Atharvaa as an action hero. With tonned physique, right expressions and subtle performance, he brilliantly fits into the role of an athlete who turns up larger than life when situation warrants. He is phenomenally convincing in stunt sequences. Sridivya looks beautiful. Performance wise, she has understood the needs of the 'Hero's love interest' character and gives a neat performance.  'Aadukalam' Naren as the hero's coach comes up with one of his best performances in his career. Jayaprakash impresses in an underplaying role as the hero's father. RNR Manohar gets a meatier role as the lead villain has given a seasoned performance. The actor who has acted as the key goon of his network is really menacing. Azhagam Perumal as Sridivya's father makes an impact with his small but strong character. Selva seems to be the best fit for upright police officer characters.</b></div>

<b>Songs by GV Prakash are passable while re-recording fits the bill and pushes the momentum in action sequences. Saravanan Abimonyu's cinematography uses is apt and the night sequences are pictured brilliantly.</b></div>

While Sathish and Dhanush get along in wooing the lady love, Aravind feels left out and leaves their company hastily but willingly. Over time, Hema and Tamizh fall apart, and eventually Hema gets married to Aravind; Tamizh finds Yamuna (Samantha) and they are two happy families. The happiness cracks down from its pinnacle, one fine morning, when Tamizh's father commits suicide. When no one understands why, the film is the story of Tamizh uncovering truth and finding answers, as a 'Thangamagan'.</div>

The first forty minutes are spent in fun and romance. Amy and Dhanush share a juvenile, lively chemistry; their rapture is one that captures the spark and energy of first love. The point where it touches you strongly emotionally is their breakup. Highlighting the point where threshold breaks for every young couple, the dispute between dreams and duty is highlighted in its niché in this scene.</div>

The family set up is portrayed in Titch reality, in every move of the Radhika-KSR couple. Importance given to the little nothings and the corresponding dialogues paints a complete rosy family portrait. As a dutiful man, questioned of his capacity, Ravikumar plays a realistic confused man. Radhika, a typical warm housewifely lady, acts the mom, like in every household. Sathish plays Kumaran, who aids a great deal in keeping the first half lively; his timing comedy is the perfect relief amidst all the dripping sweet romance.</div>

While Amy's role is appreciative in most parts, her strongest comes out only in the second half, as Aravind's wife. Aravind plays one of the baddies; though straightforward and brief to put in words, he does justice to his role in its entirety. From holding a simple grudge, to holding back a sin, his role is one of the strongest in the movie. Jayaprakash plays another strong role, and as always, his presence is powerful in the film. Samantha breezes into the second half, and plays a predominantly supportive role, than grab the limelight as a heroine. Her presence is what adds the emotional in the present to the revenge story. This romance story is mature with age, yet simple in its purity.</div>

The protagonist is captured in a different meter this time. Instead of jumping high with adrenaline, Dhanush plays a relatively composed and calm hero, always in control of the situation at hand, no matter how bad be it. This composure is what makes for the style of his on-screen role, as Tamizh. Without much stress on a signature, Dhansuh has still managed to convince as a strong hero. Tamizh is a charm to watch for, truly a golden son.</div>

At his second attempt, Velraj has carved a spot for himself in the family entertainer sector. The film has a detailed story; however, most of it is pleated in the second half, while the first half is elaborate on the introduction alone. Albeit, this time allows for absorption of the characters, but also keeps us entertained tirelessly.</div>

Kumaran's camera is a classic piece of work. His intent in capturing the fine little intricacies has fallen well in their place in the movie. One of the strongest pillars of a movie is music - the album was brief, but the score compensates for the void. Background score by Anirudh is powerful, as would be expected of the rockstar; yet, it inevitably obviously bears resemblance to his previous works. Dialogues are strong and stand alone power-packed in places.</div>

As time goes by, the probability of him being caught red-handed by his family or neighbours keeps increasing.</em><br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><strong style="background: transparent; border: 0px; font-size: 15px; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">Review: </strong>Oru Naal Iravil is mostly a faithful remake of the Malayalam film Shutter. The protagonist, Sekar (Sathyaraj) is someone who has made it in life all by himself, toiling hard in Singapore. But he is also unfairly prejudiced and chauvinistic. He suspects his teenaged daughter of having an affair just because he sees her talking with her friends and fixes a rushed alliance, turning a deaf ear to the protest of his wife.<br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" />A drunken night with his friends lead to a moment when, out of temptation, he solicits a call girl (Anumol) he comes across on the road. He is helped by Soori (Varun), an auto driver, who does odd jobs for him in the hope that Sekar will get him a job in Singapore. They take the woman to the empty property that is part of Sekar's commercial shopping space, which is also adjacent to his home. Promising to return in some time, Soori leaves them there leaving the place locked. He meets Sethubharathi (Yugi Sethu), a down-on-luck filmmaker, who had left behind his bag (containing his new script) in his auto, but is caught by the cops for drunken driving and the duo is forced to spend the night at the police station.<br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" />Meanwhile, Sekar starts fretting over Soori's absence and with the day having dawned, finds himself trapped with the prostitute, and facing the prospect of being caught at any moment.<br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" />What's refreshing about Oru Naal Iravil is how it manages to keep us thrilled even with seemingly mundane events. The script is a crafty one, where even a single event can result in a domino effect on the lives of the characters. Soori's chance conversation with a pimp leads to a mention of it during a drunken session, and that tempts Sekar to seek the services of a call girl. And a harmless peg in an earlier scene leads to the characters finding themselves in difficult situations. It's a film where every moment is crucial to the plot and every scene is shaped by how it is edited, and we can see why editor Antony would have been attracted to make his directorial debut with this film. The interval block is an excellent example of this. We see a shutter being opened and the shot cuts to Sekar cowering in shame at being discovered, leaving us in the edge of our seats. But when the film resumes, we see what is finally happening, and leave a sigh of relief. Antony uses this technique quite often and after a time, it starts to feel manipulative, even though it is effective at times. The filmmaking never manages to build tension than what's inherently in the script. The performances, too, feel, just functional. Sathyaraj is the right fit for the role, but he is made to act slightly over the top and we never get emotionally attached to this character. Much to our chagrin, it is often the busy score that tries to inject tension into the scenes.<br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" />And some of the coincidences - like the relationship between the filmmaker and the call girl - are distinctly cinematic. The filmmaker character actually is a stand-in for the audience, and his travails come across as forced. Similarly, the resolutions are rather too convenient. The episode is a moment of revelation for Sekar (he not only learns about himself, but also about the people close to him), but it is hard to believe the muted reaction of his family member, who learns of his predicament. There is not even a confrontation! In the end, we come out feeling underwhelmed as the film never fulfills the promise of its premise.</div>

Some of the important leads to the plot are in this part and it would get difficult to understand the story if this portion is missed.</span><br style="color: #444444; font-size: 16px; line-height: 28px;" /><br style="color: #444444; font-size: 16px; line-height: 28px;" /><span style="color: #444444; font-size: 16px; line-height: 28px;">The story then unfolds in 2015. Selva (Simhaa) is a BE graduate, who comes to Chennai from his hometown Madurai looking for a job. All is well until he gets hold of a mystical book. He starts getting mysterious calls after 12 pm giving him premonitions of the events to come, albeit in the form of numbers. (which are explained when the events occur) He soon finds a job in a call center where he meets his college crush (Umayaal) Reshmi Menon and romance blossoms.</span><br style="color: #444444; font-size: 16px; line-height: 28px;" /><br style="color: #444444; font-size: 16px; line-height: 28px;" /><span style="color: #444444; font-size: 16px; line-height: 28px;">In the meantime, John Cristopher (Kalaiyarasan) a tea seller-turned-finance mafia don has been on a murder rampage along with his brother Solomon (Mahesh) and a few sidekicks. Umayaal approaches their company to sort out a financial dealing and Solomon begins troubling her. When Umayaal complains about the same to Selva, he decides to teach him a lesson. Just when he is about to get to Solomon, he is set on fire by a gang.</span><br style="color: #444444; font-size: 16px; line-height: 28px;" /><br style="color: #444444; font-size: 16px; line-height: 28px;" /><span style="color: #444444; font-size: 16px; line-height: 28px;">Unable to comprehend what's happening around him, he approaches Charlie (a psychiatrist of sorts) and asks if the book would have any relevance to what's happening around him. When Solomon's murderer reveals the reason of killing to Selva, he gets into revenge mode.</span><br style="color: #444444; font-size: 16px; line-height: 28px;" /><br style="color: #444444; font-size: 16px; line-height: 28px;" /><span style="color: #444444; font-size: 16px; line-height: 28px;">The story again goes into a flashback mode and this time around, the plot is set in 1939 in a tea estate where a patriotic rebel Chezhian (Bobby) and Krishnan (Kalaiyarasan) are good friends. When Krishnan is promised a tea estate in Kozhikode in exchange of his friend Chezian, he helps the British trap him. And we again travel back to the current era for the final revenge.</span><br style="color: #444444; font-size: 16px; line-height: 28px;" /><br style="color: #444444; font-size: 16px; line-height: 28px;" /><span style="color: #444444; font-size: 16px; line-height: 28px;">The problem with </span><span style="border: 0px; color: #444444; font-size: 16px; font-stretch: inherit; font-style: inherit; line-height: 28px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">Urumeen</span><span style="color: #444444; font-size: 16px; line-height: 28px;"> is that the director has tried to infuse too many elements into one film. While two flashbacks are already a lot to take in, the second story takes its own sweet time to unfold. After a long-ish fight sequence, we realize that we are still left with the final revenge in the current era. And considering how ruthless John is portrayed in the film, it's disheartening to see him go down without a fight toward the end. Though the plot is an interesting one, the narration falters as vital links to the reincarnations haven't been explained well and leaves you confused.</span><br style="color: #444444; font-size: 16px; line-height: 28px;" /><br style="color: #444444; font-size: 16px; line-height: 28px;" /><span style="color: #444444; font-size: 16px; line-height: 28px;">Bobby Simhaa pulls off his role as a confused individual well, but it's hard to see him as a hero (playing for the first time) looking for a cold-blooded revenge. Kalaiyarasan, has done justice to his character as a villain we would love to hate. Reshmi Menon has nothing much to do in the plot overloaded with violence and bloodbath. It is a masala action movie that has smarts but is undone to an extent by the compromises that the director makes to his story. This, he seems to have done to ensure that the layman isn't turned away from the high-concept premise, but he shouldn't have feared so. As Thani Oruvan proved earlier this year, it is very much possible to attract crowds to an action film without resorting to needless comedy and romantic tracks. It is these segments that prove to be the film's Achilles heel and puts Eetti into the 'Could have been better' list.</span><br style="background-color: white; color: #3f3f3f; font-family: georgia; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><br style="background-color: white; color: #3f3f3f; font-family: georgia; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><span style="background-color: white; color: #3f3f3f; font-family: georgia; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px;">The film opens with a health show on TV on the medical condition Glanzmann's thrombasthenia, a bleeding disorder where the blood doesn't clot for those afflicted with this. We are then told that Pugazhenthi (Atharvaa), the film's protagonist, has this disorder. Pugazh is a college student and a champion athlete in Thanjavur who has made it to the national athletics meet breaking the national record. A wrong call acquaints him with Gayathri (Sri Divya, in yet another bland role), a college student in Chennai, and predictably, this association blossoms into romance. Pugazh, who comes to Chennai for the meet, saves Gayathri's brother Dinesh (Thirumurugan), who has got into trouble with a fake currency racket. Now, the gang is after him as well. Can Pugazh, whose medical condition causes him to faint at the slightest scratch, take on knife-wielding gangsters?</span><br style="background-color: white; color: #3f3f3f; font-family: georgia; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><br style="background-color: white; color: #3f3f3f; font-family: georgia; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><span style="background-color: white; color: #3f3f3f; font-family: georgia; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px;">Eetti is at its best when it gets into action mode. The pre-interval stunt, a Run-like scenario where the hero runs away from the goons chasing him only to turn the tables on them, delivers the adrenaline rush that we expect from a film in this genre. Even the scenes where the villains hunt for Pugazh are decent enough, and the climactic fight, when Pugazh takes on Eka, the right hand man of Sampath (an effective RNR Manohar), the head of the gangsters, is done well, though the villains come off as less intelligent when they fail to take advantage of the hero's weakness. The stunt choreographer, Rajashekar cleverly introduces sharp objects during the fight scenes that add an extra bit of tension as we know of the hero's medical condition. And he smartly integrates the athleticism of Pugazh into the stunts and shows us how the guy manages to evade his attackers.</span><br style="background-color: white; color: #3f3f3f; font-family: georgia; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><br style="background-color: white; color: #3f3f3f; font-family: georgia; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><span style="background-color: white; color: #3f3f3f; font-family: georgia; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px;">Even the initial romantic portions — a wrong call that becomes an excuse for the hero to communicate with the heroine — are fun. But Ravi Arasu stretches this track unnecessarily with one too many songs, even in the second half. A supposedly funny scene with Adukalam Murugadoss is a test of patience. So, when it had to shift gears and race to the fun, the film moves from the one scene to the next in a jerky manner. Thankfully, Atharvaa, who literally sweats it out to make the athletics portions believable, holds things together and carries the film past the finish line.</span></div>
