But Jo and the Boy tries to offer many lessons about living one's dreams by exhaustively examining how troughs in life can offer a thoroughfare to success. Joan (Manju Warrier) is brought up by a father and mother who are synonymous for happiness and positive outlook on life. Lalu Alex and Kalaranjini who play these roles, allow their ward to give wings to her dreams. Naturally Jo grows up into a woman who will never settle for the status of an also ran. She aspires to be an animator of international repute.</span><br style="background-color: white; font-family: 'Open Sans', Arial, Verdana; font-size: 16px; line-height: 23.104px;" /><br style="background-color: white; font-family: 'Open Sans', Arial, Verdana; font-size: 16px; line-height: 23.104px;" /><span style="background-color: white; font-family: 'Open Sans', Arial, Verdana; font-size: 16px; line-height: 23.104px;">Chris (Sanoop) a whiz kid with naughtiness and raw genius jumbles up Jo's life in the most unexpected manner. Life throws up puzzles galore and Jo and the boy join hands to explore the limitless possibilities of life. Jo and one of her close friends hit upon a novel plan to impress a leading animation production house so as to move up the ladder of success. Chris is her trump card and Achilles heel and this paradox is the film's crux. The problem that confronts the movie is that it gets entangled beyond a point and the efforts to reach a believable denouement don't fructify.</span><br style="background-color: white; font-family: 'Open Sans', Arial, Verdana; font-size: 16px; line-height: 23.104px;" /><br style="background-color: white; font-family: 'Open Sans', Arial, Verdana; font-size: 16px; line-height: 23.104px;" /><span style="background-color: white; font-family: 'Open Sans', Arial, Verdana; font-size: 16px; line-height: 23.104px;">The pristine and extraordinarily beautiful nature which is a prominent presence in the movie do give it a charm but the inability to sustain the momentum and a tame finale deflates Jo and the Boy. The long drawn out sequences which are wedged into the plot to give a solid foundation to the basic thread of coming of age look painstakingly contrived. Manju Warrier tries too hard to get into the skin of the character. Her famous mannerisms and infectious charm do spruce up the movie but the plot is too hollow for even Manju to save it. The unconvincing antagonists worsens the plight of the movie. Sanoop is in his elements and puts up a competent show which deserves applause.</span><br style="background-color: white; font-family: 'Open Sans', Arial, Verdana; font-size: 16px; line-height: 23.104px;" /><br style="background-color: white; font-family: 'Open Sans', Arial, Verdana; font-size: 16px; line-height: 23.104px;" /><span style="background-color: white; font-family: 'Open Sans', Arial, Verdana; font-size: 16px; line-height: 23.104px;">Lalu Alex, Pearly Mannie, Rekha, Sudheer Karamana, Kiran, Sunil Sukhada are part of an ensemble cast who look the part. Visuals are captivating but music is not exactly endearing. Jo and the Boy is one of those movies which flatters to deceive. Manju Warrier is its principal strength but pandering too much to her marvelous and irresistible histrionics ultimately prove its undoing. And Jo and the Boy ends up buoying no aspect of cinematic sensibilities of a discerning viewer. Jo and the Boy is a letdown.</span></div>

It could be deemed as wander thirst or a yearning to find one's real moorings. The insatiable adventurism that is her hallmark takes her to strange territories and bizarre experiences. Tessa is smitten by the irresistible charm of the utterly mysterious Charlie (Dulquer Salman), who is like a lighthouse which is profusely effulgent. He is like a kite which dances to the tunes of the wind or a spring which appears like a bolt from the blue.</span><br style="background-color: white; font-family: 'Open Sans', Arial, Verdana; font-size: 16px; line-height: 23.104px;" /><br style="background-color: white; font-family: 'Open Sans', Arial, Verdana; font-size: 16px; line-height: 23.104px;" /><span style="background-color: white; font-family: 'Open Sans', Arial, Verdana; font-size: 16px; line-height: 23.104px;">"Charlie" raises expectations with a buildup that promises a lot. It resorts to elaboration and it does perk up the proceedings at the outset. But beyond a point "Charlie" inadvertently falls into the trap of over indulgence. As the initial novelty wears off, it starts to stutter. After the breakneck acceleration the film fails to take off, but the inherent spirit in the narrative spruces it up and helps it from not becoming an insufferable experience. Charlie indeed is an interesting character and his expansive ways bordering on the eccentric bristled with possibilities. He is a bohemian in taste with artistic sensibilities. A Good Samaritan who wouldn't mind landing hefty punches on the anti-socials with the ease of a stroll in the park. With a, shoulder broad enough to assume the mantle of a protector Charlie has all the trappings of an invincible hero.</span><br style="background-color: white; font-family: 'Open Sans', Arial, Verdana; font-size: 16px; line-height: 23.104px;" /><br style="background-color: white; font-family: 'Open Sans', Arial, Verdana; font-size: 16px; line-height: 23.104px;" /><span style="background-color: white; font-family: 'Open Sans', Arial, Verdana; font-size: 16px; line-height: 23.104px;">Kani (Aparna) is pivotal in the plot and Charlie's journeys are made fruitful by this doctor woman who appears like a tip of an iceberg that runs deep. Tessa and Kani hold contrasting influences on Charlie but he never loses his reins. There are a flurry of characters in the movie played by Nedumudi Venu, Tovino Thomas, Soubin Shaheer, P.Balachandran, Ramesh Pisharody, KPAC Lalitha etc. who do make their marks as you would expect. But no character leaves a particularly deep impression in the mind. Dulquer had to be inch perfect for Charlie to flourish. The talented actor with oodles of charm doesn't fluff but falls short of being exhilarating. Parvathy in a hazily written character shows glimpses of her remarkable talent, while Aparna looks a bit off color in her grim role.</span><br style="background-color: white; font-family: 'Open Sans', Arial, Verdana; font-size: 16px; line-height: 23.104px;" /><br style="background-color: white; font-family: 'Open Sans', Arial, Verdana; font-size: 16px; line-height: 23.104px;" /><span style="background-color: white; font-family: 'Open Sans', Arial, Verdana; font-size: 16px; line-height: 23.104px;">The script by Unni.R and Martin Prakatt becomes a bit convoluted as it strives to push the envelope a tad too much. But the attempt to give freshness is unmistakably evident and "Charlie" has its moments thanks to its unpredictability which is its hallmark. Jomon.T.John's frames magic with his camera which hardly loses focus now a days. "Charlie" could be termed an audacious attempt but grandiose visions don't necessarily translate into well-crafted cinema. Pared down expectations could make it a reasonable weekend watch.</span></div>

This villainous vein looks like a gimmick. The film also should've ideally avoided playing the sympathy card from the first frame. It shows how as a society our psyche forces us to pity the underprivileged. Characters who emphatically reprimand people for referring to them as disabled try to even out the flaws but don't quite manage it. Also, it is a shame that we are told nothing about our 'heroes'. The 13 children are an amorphous mass and there is no effort to portray them as individuals with distinct identities and unique struggles.</span><br style="color: #444444; font-size: 16px; line-height: 28px;" /><br style="color: #444444; font-size: 16px; line-height: 28px;" /><span style="color: #444444; font-size: 16px; line-height: 28px;">The film's story shows promise but its tawdry execution is a problem. It is unpardonable that the actors in this film are either overacting or sleepwalking through their roles. Thankfully its leads - Maanuv Bharadwaj and Priyanka Panchaal are watchable but the same doesn't stand true for the other actors who reduce their characters to caricatures.</span><br style="color: #444444; font-size: 16px; line-height: 28px;" /><br style="color: #444444; font-size: 16px; line-height: 28px;" /><span style="color: #444444; font-size: 16px; line-height: 28px;">The technical drawbacks and logic lapses further weakens in the narrative. After an accident, an orthopedist is seen examining the patient's lungs. Clearly, this is the kind of laziness that hinders this film from making an impact. Additionally, the film's tone is too flat and though enough drama unfolds on screen, it never really touches you.</span><br style="color: #444444; font-size: 16px; line-height: 28px;" /><br style="color: #444444; font-size: 16px; line-height: 28px;" /><span style="color: #444444; font-size: 16px; line-height: 28px;">The victory of the underdog is cinema's favourite theme and filmmakers return to romance it rather frequently. But the formula is done-to-death and it is mandatory that writers show their inventive streak in rendering it. The inmate who helped her in the adventure is Bhanuprasad (Dhyan Sreenivasan) for which the girl pays him some money as well. And she has to remain in his room and hide herself under the bed, when his friends or the warden come for a visit.</span></div> <div style="font-size: 14px;"> <span style="font-family: tahoma, arial, verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div> <div style="font-size: 14px;"> <div> <span style="font-family: tahoma, arial, verdana, sans-serif;">With some funny friends like Bruno (Aju Varghese) and Remo (Neeraj Madhav), a priest (Mukesh) and his assistant (Bijukkuttan) along with the rest of the boys there, things get indeed tense. They try to come out of the hostel several times but things get from bad to worse for them. </span></div> <div> <span style="font-family: tahoma, arial, verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div> <div> <span style="font-family: tahoma, arial, verdana, sans-serif;">There are some genuinely hilarious moments in this one and the excitement of the boys to have a girl in their room is evidently palpable. Dhyan Sreenivasan does a decent job for sure. But it is Aju Varghese and Neeraj Madhav who steals the show, in a fabulous way. The film basically deals with two kids Kavin (Nishesh)and Nayana (Vaishnavi), who have Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) or in layman term - hyperactive.</div> <div style="font-size: 14px; line-height: 22px; margin-bottom: 20px; padding: 0px;"> Apparently, their naughtiness brings trouble to their respective parents (Karthik Kumar-Bindhu Madhavi and Ramdoss-Vidya Pradeep) and when they consult doctors, each one of them tag their kids with different disorders. Far too many co incidents? Things get better when both Kavin and Nayana’s parents meet the ideal couple Dr. Tamizhnadan (Suriya) and new age school teacher Venba (Amala Paul), who live in the same apartment complex.</div> <div style="font-size: 14px; line-height: 22px; margin-bottom: 20px; padding: 0px;"> If director Pandiraj had portrayed the innocence of rural kids in<i>Pasanga</i>, here he has tried poignantly to register the issues of urban kids and their parents. Making meaningful cinema is one thing but what Pandiraj has done is that he has packaged all the relevant issues in a typical Tamil cinema entertainment format with large doses of comedy and smart dialogues.</div> <div style="font-size: 14px; line-height: 22px; margin-bottom: 20px; padding: 0px;"> Yes, there are few cinematic liberties and melodramas sprinkled in the screenplay but that’s how one can touch the hearts of the masses and also bring back the investment to the producers!</div> <div style="font-size: 14px; line-height: 22px; margin-bottom: 20px; padding: 0px;"> Other than Pandiraj’s smart writing, the two kids Nishesh and Vaishnavi are the real stars of the film. If Karthik Kumar and Bindhu Madhavi couple brings seriousness to the film, Ramdoss is there to provide comedy as a guy who is a Kleptomaniac.</div> <div style="font-size: 14px; line-height: 22px; margin-bottom: 20px; padding: 0px;"> Suriya, who comes as a sensible child psychiatrist adds more energy to the movie in the second half and Amala Paul too has done a decent job, especially the couple’s flashback portions are interesting with typical Pandiraj's touches.</div> <div style="font-size: 14px; line-height: 22px; margin-bottom: 20px; padding: 0px;"> On the downside, the film’s major drawback is the deja vu feel, as it is a mixture etched out of Aamir Khan’s <i>Taare Zameen Par </i>and some scenes from Mani Ratnam’s <i>Anjali</i>. Unfortunately fate and business politics of Deepak  pushes Bhooloham to fight the national lever boxer. The winner should fight with the International psychotic boxer Steven George (Nathan Jones).</span></div> <div> <span style="font-family: tahoma, arial, verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div> <div> <span style="font-family: tahoma, arial, verdana, sans-serif;">As you read the plot, <i>Bhooloham</i>’s director Kalyan has tried to make an entertaining sports film and packaged it keeping the masses in mind. But the director has to be appreciated for not thrusting any comedy tracks , duets or item numbers. </span></div> <div> <span style="font-family: tahoma, arial, verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div> <div> <span style="font-family: tahoma, arial, verdana, sans-serif;">Just like Stallone</span><span style="font-family: tahoma, arial, verdana, sans-serif;">'s </span><i style="font-family: tahoma, arial, verdana, sans-serif;">Rocky,</i><span style="font-family: tahoma, arial, verdana, sans-serif;"> the climax fight is the highlight. The romantic track between ‘Jayam’ Ravi and Trisha, who trains him with scientific techniques (!!!) is a bit plastic. Then there is Nathan Jones, who is unintentionally hilarious, when he has to look scary.</span></div> <div> <span style="font-family: tahoma, arial, verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div> <div> <span style="font-family: tahoma, arial, verdana, sans-serif;">The film’s biggest USP is Jayam Ravi who surrenders to his character. He is credible and convincing and all the hard work shows on screen. Prakash Raj is in top form. Trisha looks pretty but has nothing much to do except motivating the hero.</span></div> <div> <span style="font-family: tahoma, arial, verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div> <div> <span style="font-family: tahoma, arial, verdana, sans-serif;">The biggest drawback are the songs which are neither catchy or  inspiring. The cuts are also abrupt and the film lacks continuity in certain scenes, thanks to the prolonged delay of the film.</span></div> <div> <span style="font-family: tahoma, arial, verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div> <div> <span style="font-family: tahoma, arial, verdana, sans-serif;">On the whole, this film is a good one-time watch, for Jayam Ravi's performance, if not anything else.
