The Finest Hours is an upcoming American disaster drama film directed by Craig Gillespie from a screenplay written by Scott Silver, Eric Johnson and Paul Tamasy, based on the 2009 eponymous book by Casey Sherman and Michael J. Tougias. The film is loosely based on the true story of the Pendleton rescue mission attempt in 1952 by Coast Guard ships, wherein two oil tankers were split asunder by a nor'easter.The film is due to be released by Walt Disney Pictures in the Disney Digital 3-D, RealD 3D, andIMAX 3D formats on January 29, 2016

Principal photography began on September 8, 2014, in Quincy, Massachusetts.On October 27, the film was being shot at Fore River Shipyard in Quincy, Massachusetts. They were also set to film at South Shore and then move to Chatham in December.In early December, filming was taken place in the town Marshfield. On December 12, Affleck was spotted playing piano at Symphony Hall in Boston, while they were shooting in Chatham at the time. About the shooting of the film, Affleck wished it to continue, saying, "one of the best".Filming also took place in Norwell, MA.
